The Mitchell Reel Company is known for introducing the first modern spinning reel that used the design with the face of the spool forward in permanent position fixed below the fishing rod. This spinning reel also used a mechnical line pickup to retrieve the cast line and an anti-reverse lever which kept the handle from spinning when a fish was pulling the line from the spool.
This design is important in that the line does not have pull against a rotating spool and lighter lures could be used.
